What is the difference between DJI Dock 2 and DJI Dock 3?

DJI Dock 2 and DJI Dock 3 are both drone-in-a-box systems designed to support remote and repeatable drone operations, but DJI Dock 3 is the newer system and is built around the DJI Matrice 4D Series. DJI describes Dock 3 as supporting 24/7 remote operations and, for the first time, vehicle-mounted deployment.

For organisations exploring remote monitoring, security, inspection or repeat site visibility, the difference matters because the right dock depends on the site, use case, aircraft requirement and long-term operating model.

  • DJI Dock 2 and DJI Dock 3 both support remote drone operations.

  • DJI Dock 3 is the newer system.

  • DJI Dock 3 is designed for DJI Matrice 4D Series aircraft.

  • DJI says Dock 3 supports 24/7 remote operations and vehicle-mounted deployment.

  • The right choice depends on the site, use case, aircraft, payload and operating model.

What does this mean?

Drone docks are designed to make drone operations more repeatable.

Instead of treating each drone flight as a separate site visit, a dock-based system can support planned missions, remote workflows and more regular data capture from a fixed or managed deployment point.

DJI Dock 2 and DJI Dock 3 sit within this wider drone-in-a-box category, but they are not the same system. DJI Dock 3 is built around the Matrice 4D Series, while DJI’s Dock 3 FAQ states that Dock 3 only supports DJI Matrice 4D Series drones.

For clients, the practical question is not just which dock is newer. It is which system fits the site, the data requirement and the way the operation needs to work.

Why does it matter?

Choosing a drone dock is not just a hardware decision.

A dock may be used for security checks, remote site monitoring, infrastructure inspection, construction progress, incident response or repeat asset visibility. Each use case may need a different aircraft, payload, software setup and support model.

DJI Dock 3 may be more relevant where an organisation is looking at newer DJI Enterprise workflows, Matrice 4D Series aircraft, more flexible deployment options or long-term remote monitoring. DJI also states that Dock 3 integrates with DJI FlightHub 2 to support remote and repeatable inspections in powerline inspection workflows.

The key is to assess the whole operation, not just compare product names.

Team UAV Insight

Team UAV is an official DJI Enterprise Reseller, but we are operators first.

That means we look at DJI Dock 2 and DJI Dock 3 through the lens of real deployment, not just product comparison. The dock needs to fit the site, the asset, the data requirement, the monitoring frequency and the client’s wider operation.

For some clients, DJI Dock 3 may support remote monitoring, security, repeat inspection or infrastructure visibility. For others, a standard drone service, mobile deployment or different enterprise setup may be more suitable.

Our focus is on helping clients understand whether dock-based drone operations are genuinely useful for their site, and what needs to be considered before investing.
