What is a Specific Category operational authorisation?
A Specific Category operational authorisation is permission from the UK Civil Aviation Authority to carry out drone operations that are more complex than those allowed in the Open Category.

What does this mean?
Drone operations in the UK are grouped into categories based on risk and complexity.
The Open Category is for lower-risk operations. The Specific Category is for more complex operations that fall outside Open Category limits.
The CAA states that operators must get an operational authorisation before carrying out operations in the Specific Category. It also states that there are two main methods of applying for an operational authorisation: PDRA and UK SORA.
Why does it matter?
Many commercial drone operations need more than basic Open Category flying.
Inspections in built-up areas, more complex industrial sites, certain infrastructure work, drone-in-a-box deployment, BVLOS operations and other advanced use cases may need a Specific Category authorisation.
Without the right authorisation, the operator may not be able to carry out the work legally or safely.
